Language Acquisition at its Best!

Flagstaff Unified School District values students' diverse backgrounds and their unique contribution to the learning community. In order to empower learners who are "meeting the challenges of a new language and culture," FUSD will support English Language Learners as "they develop social, cultural and academic competence" by creating a successful learning environment.

FUSD recognizes that ELL students must work towards learning the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing the English language. Our two-year program allows students to become skilled in learning the English language, and it gives them support in learning to live in Flagstaff. Once students achieve the proficiency level, they progress to the mainstream classroom. Fortunately, these students continue to receive the same supportive instruction.

Our ELL program offers two English Language Development classes for beginning speakers and intermediate speakers. Students are given a four-hour block of time to develop the skills to perform at their grade level.
